Sinex Products for Cough, Cold, and Flu Symptoms

Sinex products are used to treat nasal congestion, including a stuffy nose and sinus congestion.

Some Sinex products contain a medicine called oxymetazoline. Oxymetazoline is a decongestant that helps with congestion and inflammation by narrowing your blood vessels, which can help you breathe better.

There are also Sinex products that are “drug-free,” meaning they do not contain any medicine. Instead, these products contain saline (a mixture of salt and water). Saline can help moisturize your nasal passages, clear out mucus if you have nasal congestion, and wash away pollen, dust, or other particles that can cause allergies or irritation. Some of these products can be used by adults and children as young as 1 month old.

Sinex products are generally well tolerated. Side effects may vary depending on the ingredients in the specific product you are using. Some possible side effects include burning or stinging of the nose, sneezing, or runny nose.

You should not share any Sinex product with other people. This could spread germs and increase the risk of infection.

Stop using the medicine if you develop a rash or hives. Get medical help right away if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

Sinex Products With Oxymetazoline. Talk to your health care provider before using a Sinex product with oxymetazoline to reduce your stuffy nose if you have any of the following conditions.

Read the instructions on your Sinex product to make sure you are using it correctly. Some Sinex products with oxymetazoline may ask you to prime the spray before using it for the first time. To prime your nasal spray, spray the products a few times away from you until you see a fine mist appear. This helps make sure the medicine comes out properly. Read the directions on the Sinex product you are using to see if this applies to the product you are using.

Do not use a Sinex product with oxymetazoline more often than every 10-12 hours (no more than two doses per 24 hours). Do not use Sinex products with oxymetazoline for more than three days. Using a Sinex product with oxymetazoline more often or for longer than directed may lead to rebound congestion, where your symptoms can get worse or come back. Stop using Sinex and talk to your health care provider if your symptoms do not go away or get worse.

Medicine-Free Sinex Products. Sinex saline products do not contain any active ingredients (medicine). These products can be used as often as needed or as your health care provider recommends. Some products are used as a nasal spray (mist) or can be used to flush and irrigate the nasal passages (nasal rinse). Follow the directions on the label of the specific product you are using.

There may be side effects, additional warnings, and interactions with other medicines that are not listed here. These may vary depending on the combination of ingredients in the specific Sinex product you are using. Always check the label before using any over-the-counter medicine. Do not use more than the recommended dose. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your health conditions and other medicines to help determine which products are safe for you.

These products contain no medicine, with most products not containing added preservatives. These products can help with a stuffy nose, sinus congestion, and moisturizing your nasal passages.
