Aveeno Products for Dry, Itchy, or Irritated Skin

Medically Reviewed by Rachel Maynard, PharmD on November 17, 2025

Many Aveeno products can be used to help with itchy or irritated skin. They often contain the following types of ingredients.

  • Skin protectant (calamine, colloidal oatmeal, glycerin). These ingredients help restore moisture to the skin and seem to soothe or help with skin itching and irritation.
  • External analgesic (pramoxine) works to reduce itching and pain by temporarily blocking nerve signals.
  • Topical anti-itch (hydrocortisone) may help reduce inflammation in your skin by calming down the immune system’s defense cells (white blood cells). It may also stop these cells from releasing substances that cause inflammation. It may also narrow blood vessels where they are applied, which may help reduce swelling.

Some Aveeno products do not specify a specific age limit for use. However, when age limitations are included, there are Aveeno products for adults and children as young as 6 months old.

Aveeno products are generally well tolerated. Side effects may vary depending on the ingredients in the specific product you are using.

Stop using the medicine if you develop a rash or hives. Get medical help right away if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

Aveeno products are for external use only. You should not swallow them or get them in your eyes.

Some Aveeno products may have limitations on where or how they can be used. For example, some products should not be used on deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns. Follow any specific instructions or limitations mentioned in the product labeling for the specific product you are using.

Stop using any Aveeno product if your condition seems to get worse instead of better, lasts longer than seven days, or gets better, but then gets worse again within a few days.

There may be side effects, additional warnings, and interactions with other medicines that are not listed here. These may vary depending on the combination of ingredients in the specific Aveeno product you are using. Always check the label before taking any over-the-counter medicine. Do not use more than is recommended. Talk to your health care provider or pharmacist about your health conditions and other medicines to help determine which products are safe for you.
