A diagnosis of ATTR-CM can seem overwhelming. To make it even more confusing, there are two types of ATTR-CM: hereditary (hATTR-CM) and wild type (wATTR-CM).
“If you have a diagnosis of ATTR-CM or have a family member diagnosed with hereditary ATTR-CM, it's important to get genetic testing.”
Hereditary ATTR-CM runs in families and is caused by a variant in the transthyretin gene, which leads to amyloid deposits in your heart, nerves, and sometimes other parts of your body. With wild-type ATTR-CM, there's no gene variant.
Here are some next steps to help you prepare.
Getting genetic testing is your choice. Weigh the pros and cons and do what feels right for you and your life.
